King Kazimierz Wielki built the royal castle in the middle of the "indestructible"(niepolomny) primeval forest. Hence the royal castle and the settlement took the name Niepolomice. The castle from the 14 century served as a residence and guarded the main road into Cracow. The two habitable wings of the castle were surrounded by walls. Behind those walls a settlement developed. According to the legends Kazimierz Wielki often visited the nearby villages in order to see how his subjects were doing. The castle also was made famous by Wladyswaw Jagiello, who liked coming to Niepolomice to hunt. The chronicles report several dozen visits of this kind. Niepolomice was the place where the great victory of the Battle of Grunwald was celebrated. In memory of this event, the Grunwald-Hill was piled up in Niepolomice 500 years later.
